Famously used by Scott Adams when he was still working in an office but wanted to become a famous cartoonist. He would stand in front of the mirror and repeat his goal to himself.

In God's Debris he explains how this works, he does not think that the world is listening, he thinks that concentrating on the goal every day makes the mind focused on spotting opportunities, and this gives the illusion that the affirmation is causing the opportunities, whereas they were in fact always there.

It is important to focus on your goals, so that you can see places to advance them. This is also how Dunning-Kruger works.
