Planning - 12 week year

(See book The 12 Week Year)

Execution is what sets great companies above the rest. Companies usually think on yearly basis, they plan and track their performance on the scale of a single year (although there might be quarterly goals as well).

Actions predict your future. 'Show me your habits and I will tell you your future'. Planning not so much.

It is hard to predict and pre-plan on the scale of a year, things change. With a 12 week plan you choose 2-3 things to focus on and ignore the rest. You do whatever you can to accomplish these goals, then you move into the next 12 weeks. Be very good at those three things, rather than mediocre at many. Some echoes of Agile. It also allows for smaller feedback loops, allowing tactics to be adjusted mid-sprint.

Each week and each day there is an effort to be mindful of what progress has been made toward the goals. There is the concept of 'tactics' which are like habits essentially. Like me with Beeminder, if you have something planned for that day, you don't sleep untill it is done.

Execution is everything.
