Rpg - Creating characters through play

If a character is carefully designed prior to play, it can be hard to really get into their head. They are an intellectual creation, not an emotional one. If, instead, the character is developed through play, i.e.. by the speech and actions of the player, it feels like it might be easier to inhabit them.

One way of forcing this might be the 'funnel', like in DCC and Funnel World, wherein you are unable to become too attached to a character due to having 3 of them, and knowing most or all will die. Then, during play, the events that occur will push the character in a certain direction, and a personality will hopefully emerge.
