Zettelkasten - write in your own words

A note you write is in your own voice, in writing the note you create information in the form of your interpretation of the original idea, text, article, etc.

It is tempting to always take the full quote, try and pull the original ideas out of the text, but you will never get the whole of the text, all the context.

Instead you will get one aspect of the text, the idea, which is filtered through your own brain, constructed on the foundations of the other ideas you have floating around in there at the time. This is now your own idea. It will be easier to remember, to link to other ideas.

In writing the note in your own voice, the idea becomes your own.

A text is not useful in itself, only the ideas it inspires have value!

(I find I tend to prefix notes from books and articles with at least the author name, often the book. This seems fine and useful, and not in conflict with this concept)

An extension to this idea is that our own writing does not appear in the zettelkasten. Instead we might create writing using zettels, and then create new zettels based on the final product.
